Focus Areas

As a passionate community health educator, certified lifestyle coach and certified diabetes care and education specialist, I have been helping communities, especially underserved and children and adolescents to understand the importance of Chronic Disease prevention at its early stage of development. I have been teaching Asthma self management and Diabetes self management and Diabetes Prevention to various age groups at schools, afterschool programs, libraries, YMCAs, special needs communities etc.

I have been Utilizing the vehicle of service learning and collaborative, experiential and community engaged learning for undergraduate teaching & training in cultural competency, experiential workshops/practicum for public health and patient navigation curriculum initiatives that promote equality and justice for all regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion or physical ability.

Biography

I am a Master Certified Health Education Specialist and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist with a background in Public Health and Anthropology. As a Public Health Educator and Chronic Disease Program Director at a Primary Care Clinic my responsibility is to oversee the development and implementation of the clinic's Diabetes Prevention, Education and Management initiatives, leveraging my expertise in teaching to help patients lead healthier, happier and fulfilling lives.
I have been teaching courses in Human Development, Anthropology, Global Health, Public Health, Patient Navigation, Refugee & Immigrant Health and practicums in Community Health at several colleges and Universities since 2002.
I have 2 Masters Degrees and a PhD degree (Masters and PhD in Bio cultural Anthropology, Masters in Public Health degree). I have more than 20 years of experience in teaching and developing effective mechanisms to improve the health outcomes of individuals and communities, especially regarding chronic disease prevention and self management through patient education at several levels including clinical encounters, community outreach, and designing innovative college/ university courses. My research focus is in Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Ergonomics and Physical Fitness, Refugee and Immigrant health across diverse ages and population groups. Post doctoral research on Ergonomic Evaluation of VDT users, Childhood Obesity in the U.S. and Refugee & Immigrant health.

I am the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships. In 2013, I received SOPHE's (Society for Public Health Education) Dorothy B. Nyswander Open Society Award (now called Health Equity Award) received at SOPHE's 64th Annual Meeting "The Magic of Health Education Vision, Imagination & Transformation in Orlando, Florida.
I also received Delhi University Student Union Award, a Rotary Scholarship, and 2 University Gold Medals (Summa cum laude) from University of Delhi in India. These two🥇🥇Gold Medals🥇🥇 were awarded for being the top rank student in the Masters of Science🎓 (M.Sc) and Bachelors of Science🎓 (B.Sc) programs at University of Delhi (India).
